Billy Trail re-opens following upgrade

The section at the north of the island is now open again, although all users are being asked to treat the new surface with respect while it is bedding in.

There’s also some more work to do that will not require the path to be closed, so please watch out for people working.

Peter Drury’s blog has some photos of the new section and some taken while it was under construction.

We are all hoping that this will prove to be an excellent development that will show the way for future Billy Trail improvements. We’ll be keeping an eye on it as time goes on.

Thanks – once again – are due to Peter Drury who has done so much to bring this about through his Hayling Billy 50 work. I’m sure he’d be the first to point out that it’s been a team effort involving Havant, Hampshire, National Lottery and a bunch of others.

Survey results

Thank you to everyone that helped us with our survey which asked supporters to tell us the relative importance of each of our cycle path projects to cyclists.

You told us that:

  • The North-South link and an upgrade to the Hayling Billy trail are most important
  • Footpath 102 is a clear runner-up – which puts the main routes on and off the island in the top positions
  • We are justified in keeping the relief bridge as aspirational for the time being
  • There are regional variations but they do not differ widely from the overall findings

You gave us a lot of comments. Thanks for all the messages of support. They are very welcome. We’ll take the comments into account when pursuing the individual projects. We’ll also add the possibility to provide an off road route from Beachlands to the Ferry as an aspirational project – it’s unlikely we’ll be able to make any significant progress, though, while the future of the ferry is so uncertain.

Thank you from Cycle Hayling

Voting took place yesterday on Hayling Island to decide which applications would be funded under the ‘Approved by you’ scheme.

I’m pleased to report we were one of the successful applications so we now have £500 to improve cycle signage around the Island.

Thank you to everyone that voted for us – we’ll make sure we make good use of the money.

Thanks also to Wilf – for organising our bid and the presentation on the day – and to Robert and Sue for their support.

Work about to start at the North end of the Hayling Billy Trail?

The latest progress report on the bridge works (Works Progress 7: 16th April 2014 on this page) says…

We’ll then move off the road and work on the ‘Hayling Billly 50’ Trail rebuilding, completing everything by mid June.

That’s a reference to Lottery-funded project initiated by Peter Drury as part of the Hayling Billy 50 years commemoration.

It looks like something is definitely going to happen. We understand that the project will:

  • Use the same surface as recently laid at the south end of the Billy Trail
  • Resurface a limited section of the trail (and not, as hoped, as far as the Esso Garage)

We are concerned over the quality of recent cycle path development by both Havant and Hampshire so – at Peter’s request – I have documented our concerns with an offer to help. Peter has passed them to the project board.

Concrete Recycling Plant Application .

The planning application for a Recycle Centre and depot storage facility at the Howard Car Spares site in Mill Rythe Lane has been resubmitted by Brenchley. The reference number is App/14/00204 on both the HCC and HBC websites.
The consulation closing date was 18 March, but this has now been extended to 23 April, so there is still time to make your comments.
