As reported in today’s Portsmouth News (see http://www.portsmouth.co.uk/news/cash-grant-set-to-give-hayling-billy-a-new-lease-of-life-1-5763502) the Peter Drury HB50 project to mark the 50 years since the last Hayling Billy steam train, has now been successful in gaining Lottery funds of nearly £90k. Well Done Peter and we look forward to seeing the improvements on the island part of the Billy Trail.

Speedwatch starts up on Hayling Island
It’s taken a while, but the Hayling Island Speedwatch campaign is finally up and running.
The first few sessions will be accompanied by PC Dave Wedlake. After that, the programme will be run entirely by local volunteers. The group joins existing local Speedwatch campaigns in Emsworth and Bedhampton and all the other campaigns nationwide.

16 Cub Scouts get their cycling badges
Following our afternoon with Mengham Junior school during Bike Week, Mandy Hawke – leader of Saturn Pack, 3rd Hayling Scout Group – got in touch to ask if we could help her pack get their cycling badges.
We were pleased to do that. It was a cooperative effort with the pack leaders doing most of the sessions and we filled in with the more technical stuff.

Seafront path extension work has started
Work has started on extending the new accessibility path – a requirement of the ‘Blue Flag’ qualification.
We predicted that there would be more work than shown on the new Havant cycle map and that it could start soon, but we didn’t realise quite how soon.
The new path will be available to pedestrians, wheelchair users, mobility scooter users and, of course, cyclists. When it’s finished, you will be able to cycle off road all the way from Sandy Point to Beachlands. Continue reading “Seafront path extension work has started”
Cycle Hayling/CTC Portsmouth Score Resounding Success at Havant Goes Greener Fair.
Havant held their annual Havant Goes Greener Fair last Saturday, 14 Sept.
In spite of the poor weather and comparative low number of visitors to the fair, the Cycle Hayling/ CTC Portsmouth stall was a great success in attracting many adults and youngsters to the Turbo Cycle Challenge. This was a competition where 2 bikes, one normal adult size bike and the other a child’s bike are mounted on turbo trainers. Riders have 1 minute from a standing start to see how far they can pedal, with the result put on Leader Boards in each group. The main difference from last year’s stall was the addition of a child’s bike to provide for the significant numbers of youngsters who, even with the saddle fully down, couldn’t reach the pedals of the adult bike. More cycle path improvements coming soon
The updated Hayling Cycle map published by Havant at http://www.havant.gov.uk/sites/default/files/documents/Back_FINAL.pdf reveals a number of developments planned to complete by Spring 2014:
- Completion of the links between the Langstone section of the Billy Trail and the Hayling section making it possible to use off-road cycle paths to travel between West Town and Havant – with just a few road crossings.
- Signposting of a cycle route to the west of Beachlands taking people onto Ferry Road to the East of the Golf Club.
We understand that there might be other developments taking place at the same time and that some work could be completed well before next Spring.

Hayling to Paris 2014
It seems a long way off, but next year’s Hayling to Paris ride is open for registration.

Havant Goes Greener Fair
Cycle Hayling in conjunction with CTC Portsmouth will have a stall at the Havant Goes Greener Fair which will take place in Havant Park between 10am and 4pm on Saturday 14th September. The stall will be similar to the very successful one (see our news item) at the Hayling Island 3 Churches Fete held on 14th Aug, with 2 bikes to see who can win prizes by being the fastest during a 1 minute pedal. Apart from the competitions, Cycle Hayling and CTC Portsmouth members will be available to provide information and answer questions on any cycling related matter. So come along and pay us a visit.
