Hayling Lions Club are holding a Donkey Derby & Fete on Saturday 28 May at Legion Field (just off Legion Road), Hayling Island, from 13.00 to 16.00. Cycle Hayling together with Portsmouth CTC will have a stall with 2 Turbo Challenge bikes to see who can ride the furthest in 1 minute. This has been very well attended with over 100 riders competing in previous year’s events and is one of the ways we promote Cycle Hayling, the Portsmouth CTC club and generally encourage cycling. Come along and join the fun, and even better help to set up and manage the stall. If you can help out please e-mail at: Robert@cyclehayling.org
Father’s Day family outing and charity ride on Hayling
A good chance to encourage young cyclists when Havant Rotary organise a Father’s Day family outing and charity ride, on Sunday, June 19th, 2016. It starts from Northney Farm Field (opposite the Tea Rooms), then south down the Billy Trail to the beach, and back again for a barbecue and bouncy castle. If you know any children or grandchildren, it’s a great way to get them riding – or adults, come to that. And prostate cancer is a very appropriate charity for Father’s Day.
Riders set off after registering and collecting their free T-Shirt at Northney Farm Field from 10 am. At the end of the ride there is a BBQ and activities back at the field. Alternatively, you can picnic if you wish to bring your own food.
Find out the answers to our quiz! No racing is involved so you have time to enjoy the ride and at the same time be sponsored to raise funds for Prostate Cancer UK and Havant Rotary‘s local Charities, or you can choose to donate your sponsorship money to your own charity.
This is a fun day for families who want to have an enjoyable day out with their children and bikes. The 12 mile ride should take about 2 hours at a family-friendly pace (but you can turn round at any point along the way if it’s too difficult!). Why not get your wider family and friends to join in and make a real day of it?
Entry is only £12.50 for one adult and a child (under 18) and includes a free T-shirt. Additional children are £2.50 each to cover the cost of the T-shirt. When you complete the entry form don’t forget to let us know the sizes of T-shirt you need!

Consultation is now open on the council proposal to reduce the speed limit from 40 mph to 30 mph on the section of road between the Stoke end of Copse Lane and Northney village. Details of the proposal, ref. number AS/TRO/298, can be found at www.havant.gov.uk/tro

Cathedral challenge
Portsmouth CTC is organising a series of week-end rides for people new to group riding or who haven’t cycled for a while. They start after Easter with short ‘get to know you’ rides that include a free bike check and progress through longer distances, tackling a series of challenges along the way:
- Bronze: Havant to Portsmouth cathedral and back
- Silver: Chichester cathedral and back via the South Downs National Park
- Gold: Winchester cathedral and back
All rides are led by CTC-accredited ride leaders and supported by experienced riders. They start from The Spring Centre in Havant or Bidbury Park in Bedhampton.
The Cathedral Challenge page at…
PortsmouthCTC.org.uk/cathedral-challenge
… includes some inspirational stories from some of our members who have achieved far more than they thought possible. Cycling has the potential to be truly life-affirming.
You don’t need sponsorship and there’s no fee to join any of the rides. The only cost is one-year’s subscription to CTC if you join more than three rides.
Hayling Ferry Public Meeting
Hayling Island and Havant Labour party have organised a public meeting about the Hayling Ferry. The meeting is being held on Saturday 23rd January from 12pm at The Shades public house, 29 Seafront, Hayling (near the funfair).
It will be attended by Tim Trayte and Dave Baker, the new owners of the ferry, and chaired by Mike Evans, Secretary of Havant Labour Party.
It will be an opportunity to find out about new proposals and to discuss the way forward, including community involvement.

Congratulations to Peter McQuade MBE!
It’s fantastic news that Peter – the force behind the Paris to Hayling ride – and a long-time supporter of Cycle Hayling has been awarded an MBE.
The ‘Ride’ has been going for 30 years and the next ride to LeMans is already fully-subscribed (although there are bound to be cancellations, so it might not be too late to enter). So far, it has raised over £1.5m and many local groups – including Cycle Hayling – have benefitted.
Well done, Peter!

Billy Trail repairs update
We’ve received the following from Steve Mountain, the project manager:
We are running a little late (we originally hoped to have had the work done by now) due to the bad weather over the past weekend. HCC has also asked us to do some additional defence work whilst we are on site.
The expectation is that the Trail should be open to the public by the early part of next week.
We’ll let you know when we hear more.
Online speed limit survey
A Hayling resident who is opposed to the new 30mph speed limit on the main Havant Road (see letters in November edition of The Hayling Islander) has set up an online poll regarding the speed limit.
It is a very quick two-question poll, which can be accessed at: www.surveymonkey.com/r/V6MYVWK
It simply asks whether or not you are in favour of the new speed limit and whether or not you were properly informed about the change.
Letters in The Hayling Islander
The November edition of the Hayling Islander newspaper contained several letters that might interest our cycle community, and which some supporters may not have read.
One letter-writer singled out for criticism the behaviour of Hayling cyclists (in particular the “lycra clad fraternity” – so that excludes any of us ladies!). The criticism centred on cyclists riding two-abreast and not using approved cycle paths.
Four letters, however, concerned the new 30 mph speed limit on Havant Road, including a letter from John Perry, UKIP Hayling East Councillor. Apart from disapproving of the reduction in speed limit from 40 mph to 30 mph, there were also complaints about lack of prior notification and signage from Hampshire County Council.
I’m sure many of us who support Cycle Hayling would disagree with at least some of these opinions. Instead of an “official” response from Cycle Hayling, however, it might be more effective if individuals who felt strongly on these issues were to write their own letter to the Hayling Islander.
