Cycle Hayling/CTC Portsmouth Score Resounding Success at Havant Goes Greener Fair.

Havant held their annual Havant Goes Greener Fair last Saturday, 14 Sept.
In spite of the poor weather and comparative low number of visitors to the fair, the Cycle Hayling/ CTC Portsmouth stall was a great success in attracting many adults and youngsters to the Turbo Cycle Challenge. This was a competition where 2 bikes, one normal adult size bike and the other a child’s bike are mounted on turbo trainers. Riders have 1 minute from a standing start to see how far they can pedal, with the result put on Leader Boards in each group. The main difference from last year’s stall was the addition of a child’s bike to provide for the significant numbers of youngsters who, even with the saddle fully down, couldn’t reach the pedals of the adult bike. Havant Goes Greener Fair

Cycle Hayling in conjunction with CTC Portsmouth will have a stall at the Havant Goes Greener Fair which will take place in Havant Park between 10am and 4pm on Saturday 14th September. The stall will be similar to the very successful one (see our news item) at the Hayling Island 3 Churches Fete held on 14th Aug, with 2 bikes to see who can win prizes by being the fastest during a 1 minute pedal. Apart from the competitions, Cycle Hayling and CTC Portsmouth members will be available to provide information and answer questions on any cycling related matter. So come along and pay us a visit. Progress to Date on the Safe Route to Schools Project – March ’13

Hampshire County Council (HCC) have now laid a new surface on the path running north-south between Mill Rythe and Eastwood Close known as the cinder track, or more formally as Footpath 88. This has been done to make the path ‘dual use’ so that cyclists can now avoid the very busy and congested main Church Road. This path runs just to the east of Hayling College and ends close to the Mill Rythe school campus, and so has been specifically created for those travelling to and from school during the very busy morning and afternoon school trips. HCC still have some ‘finishing off’ to do, such as putting up signs, but with all the barriers, machinery and material now gone the route is available for use. North-South Off-Road Cycle Link – Progress Jan ’13

The option to share the Registered Riders Scheme (RRS) trail to the east of the main road (A2023) has been explored. All three landowners have been contacted and have indicated they would be happy to have cyclists sharing these paths; however all have also stated that the RRS must first accept the proposals. A Hampshire County Council officer has appraised the route and indicated that it appears feasible. To date (Jan 2013) Cycle Hayling, in spite of several requests, has yet to get the RRS to meet and discuss the proposals. We remain optimistic that we will eventually achieve a meeting with the RRS membership.

Safe Route to School Scheme – Progress to January 2013

Hampshire County Council has agreed to implement the northern part of the scheme (Footpath 88) between Eastwood Close and Mill Rythe and work is expected to commence in Spring 2013. The southern part is now deemed to be Phase 2 of the project and solutions to the contentious ‘pinch point’ adjacent to My Lord’s Lane are being sought.
