Hayling needs Haylink…

… a safe, child-friendly, all-weather cycle route to the bridge.

This is the article we submitted for the November edition of the Hayling Islander. The published article was subject to editing by the Islander.

You may have seen the road works in Langstone alongside the main road. Havant and Hampshire councils are building a shared path to allow cyclists to ride safely between the Billy Trail at Mill Lane and the Langbrook Restaurant. The next phase will link all the way to Tesco and beyond.

A cycle ride around Langstone Harbour

This very accomplished video from Mike Beel shows guides you round the Langstone Harbour Ride shown on the back of our Cycle Map.

The illustrated route uses the shared cycle path from the Langbrook Carvery south along the main road to Mill Lane (in red here). This is narrow in places, and passes several obscured drives.

A quieter alternative (shown in blue) is to cross the main road at the Langbrook Carvery into Woodberry Avenue which becomes Southbrook Road. Turn left into the small cul de sac after Hamilton Close (also called Southbrook Road) and use the tucked-away cut-through on the right at the red dot to join the Langstone section of the Billy Trail and on to rejoin the described route at Mill Lane.

Are you 55 or over?

According to the Hayling Islander, Havant Borough Council has been awarded a £147,000 grant from the National Lottery’s Sport England to promote sporting activities by residents aged 55 or older.

HBC is looking to find out from you what kind of activities it should support. If you are in that age category and would like to see HBC help you get into cycling or other sporting activities, please complete their questionnaire.

Hayling Island traffic consultation

Havant Borough Council is conducting a short consultation about traffic on Hayling Island. This includes a section about cycling and a specific question about use of an all-weather surface for the Billy Trail.

You can get printed copies of the questionnaire at the library or the community centre, or you can complete the survey (which is just 21 questions) online at www.havant.gov.uk/hayling-survey.

Completed surveys have to be in by 10th December.

We’d like your views on a new cycle path

Havant Borough Council is planning a new cycle path. The path would join up with the existing shared path that goes from the north west corner of the bridge, to Mill Lane. It would continue all the way up the west side of Langstone road to the entrance to Langstone Technology Park. The path will be two-way. Some of it will be resurfaced and it will by-pass a tree that is right in the middle of the pavement. Havant is also proposing to improve some road layouts, crossings and amenities.

Northney 30mph speed limit to go ahead

I’ve just received the following from the Havant Travel Team:

Thank you for your submission regarding the proposed speed limit reduction along Copse Lane and St Peters Road, Hayling Island from 40mph to 30mph.

Following a review of all consultation comments and with agreement from your district and county councillors I can confirm that the speed limit reduction will proceed as originally advertised.

Our contractor has been instructed to complete the associated lining and signing works in the week commencing 5th December with a view to having the scheme implemented as of 9th December. Due to the time of year, the lining works will be weather dependant so it may be the case that these estimated dates slip slightly but I would hope that the 30mph speed limit will be in force by the end of the calendar year.

Ferry re-launching!

It’s a triumph for a bunch of persistent and hard-working people and for community support – the ferry is due to be re-launched tomorrow 5th August with a full, Summer service starting Saturday 6th August.

The opening event is free and starts at 12.30 including: pyrotechnics, Police guard of honour, music by local star Chloe Anne, free face painting, and the Portsmouth Football Club mascot.

For one day only, crossings will be £1 per trip.

More details of the opening event, fares and timetable on the ferry’s new web site at www.haylingferry.net.

Service updates will appear on Facebook and Twitter. There will also be an on-board mobile phone – we’ll update our ferry status page when we know the number.

Later this evening we’ll be removing the ‘No Ferry’ sign at the top of the island and updating all the sign boards around the island.
