CTC Summer BBQ

Event Details

Portsmouth CTC (Cyclists’ Touring Club) is running a short ride to Queen Elizabeth Country Park for a BBQ. The ride starts with coffee and cake at the Havant Spring Centre at around 10:30am. It leaves at 11 getting to QE Park in time for the BBQ at 1pm. There’ll be several options for getting back again. The ride is designed for people of average fitness and is open to everyone. There’s no charge for joining the ride but there is a £5 charge for food and you need to register in advance. You’ll be riding for about 1.5 hours each way. We’ll be using dedicated cycle tracks and cycle lanes wherever possible. We’ll also be using country lanes and back streets.

Inevitably, though, you will be travelling in traffic for part of the way, so the ride is not suitable for people that are uncomfortable cycling on the road.

Don’t worry if you’re unsure you can keep up, or manage to do the whole trip. The CTC doesn’t leave people behind. If necessary, they’ll split the ride to ensure everyone gets to enjoy it.

You do not need a special bike, but it should be roadworthy – you should test your brakes and gears in particular. If you haven’t oiled your chain or checked your tyre pressures in a while, best do it beforehand.

It’s not CTC policy to insist that you wear a helmet, but they strongly advise that you do. You don’t need special clothing, but you should have something water and wind proof available. Be prepared to add or shed layers depending on the weather. It’s also good to carry some water with you.

Some thoughts about what you need for the ride.

Cycling is a great way to improve health and well-being, and you’ll find the CTC is a friendly bunch. They’d love to see you.

Let me know if you need more information.
