STOP PRESS! The Hayling Ferry engine trouble is fixed and it WILL be up and running on Sunday! We’ll be the test pilots!
See haylingferry.net for latest info.
But the Billy Trail is still shut for the Round the Harbour ride 😡😡😡, so we’ve got an alternative route ready to go, probably adding a mile or two.
Come and join our Winter Family ride to Canoe Lake in Southsea, on Sunday 2nd February – easy to remember – 2 wheels on 2/2, (but we will accept trikes and unicycles 🙂 ).
We’ll have 3 options to cater for all ages and abilities – 10, 20 or 30 miles.
The slow ride will ride along the seafront via the ferry, which is about about 5 miles each way from Eastoke, or 10 miles round trip. We’ll have trained marshalls to guide you, riding mostly on quiet roads, cycle paths and segregated cycle lanes. And we’ll ride in Bike Bus formation, with kids and beginners protected from traffic on the inside. See cyclehayling.org/bikebus to find out what fun that is!
More ambitious/faster riders can ride ‘Round The Harbour’ down the Billy Trail, hopefully testing out the new all-weather northern section, led by experienced riders from Portsmouth CTC. That’s about 15 miles from Eastoke, so 20 miles returning via the ferry, or 30 miles round the harbour – your choice.
We’ll start at 10.30 sharp at the Eastoke Hayling Light Railway station, picking up more at Inn On The Beach, round between 10:45 and 11:00. We’ll catch the 11:05 or 11;50 Hayling Ferry across to Eastney, then we’ll ride along the sea front to Canoe Lake for lunch.
Bring sandwiches or use the café, whichever you prefer, depending on the weather. We’ll return when everyone’s ready, probably aiming for the 14:25 or 15:10 ferry. That’s well before dark, but lights are always a good idea if you have some.
We’ll have some small prizes for the best blinged bikes – adults can also take part too!
Under 18’s will need a signed parental consent form, and under 16’s must be accompanied by a responsible adult. And all riders will need to sign a disclaimer form (except Cycling UK members). You can download the form at RideEntryForm CH & PCTC, but we’ll bring some along.
Dress warm, and please bring money or contactless payment for the Hayling Ferry and sandwiches or lunch money. Please help us estimate numbers via Cycle Hayling’s Facebook page, or emailing wilf@cyclehayling.org.
You can see the short route at ridewithgps.com/routes/49540623, a bit over 5 miles, as it seems to have counted the ferry.
And the longer, faster route at ridewithgps.com/routes/49540961.
So your choice:
- 10 miles for short route both ways,
- 20 miles one of each way,
- 30 miles round the harbour there and back!
